It can be easy to assume that the words you provide on your website are the most valuable – but in reality, the overall content offering, including images, on the site are your biggest assets. Why is that? Because consumers will click and scan a site quickly to see if it contains the information they are looking for. If your site is comprised of only large chunks of words, chances are, a potential customer isn’t going to stick around to read it all.
Why Images?
That’s not to say that that information isn’t important, but it is important to break it into digestible chunks with headers and images. But not just any images, rather, images that are relevant to your content as well as those that are appealing and laid out correctly.
5 Keys to Optimizing Website Images:
- Optimal size images for your website are between 1500- 2500 pixels. Anything smaller or larger will be either blurry or pixilated. Balancing size and resolution (clarity) will leave you with beautifully clear images that also load quickly.
- Images should be saved as either .jpeg or .png files for best results. For large color block images, aim for .png files.
- It’s easier to size an image down rather than make it larger, so go bigger than you think and then scale down. Think of it like a gallon of water; a gallon will only fill a gallon jug, not a swimming pool. The result of trying to stretch an image will have a blurry result.
- Unless the look and feel of your site and brand is eclectic, be sure that all your images are relatively uniform in size and format. Make sure images are within your text width and aim to have them all the same direction for a consistent look and feel.
- Don’t forget to fill out all the information on your image information to maximize your SEO. Alt text, caption and title are all opportunities to add information that can help your SEO rank.
