In 2020, our team and our colleagues organized welcome baskets full of toiletries and essentials for the deserving families of UMOM New Day Centers. This year we chose to give back in a couple of ways and we’re excited to share with you in the hopes that our good deeds will inspire more in our community.

Save the Family

Save the Family donations from Hammersmith Support

Save the Family is a local Phoenix organization whose mission is to “[equip] families to address poverty, overcome homelessness, and achieve self-sufficiency.” The organization works to achieve these goals by providing housing, sponsoring youth programs, educational programs, career services, veterans services, and domestic violence services. Save the Family feeds over 250 people for Thanksgiving. Our team compiled two dinner “baskets” with supplies to feed families this Thanksgiving.

Our team was honored to volunteer our time with Feed My Starving Children! Volunteers hand-pack nutritious MannaPack® meals specifically designed to assist in reversing and preventing undernutrition in over 100 different countries around the world. Not only our team but also Nathan Joseph of Response Creative were in attendance. In just under two hours, we were able to pack 108 boxes of food that will provide 63 children with 23,328 meals—enough for a whole year!

You may have read about UMOM in our post highlighting some of the amazing holiday projects of several local charities. We couldn’t help but get involved again this year! Our team assembled and donated six stockings full of gifts and goodies for some very deserving girls and boys. All of the recipients are between the ages of 10-13, the same ages as some of the team’s children, which made it even more special for us.

Think about your favorite websites. What do they look like? We’d venture to guess that at least one reason you love the sites that you do is that there are great images. Maybe a few, maybe a lot, but whether we’re conscious of it or not, images play a big role in a website’s design. More importantly, professional images are essential. While a snapshot from your phone is OK for a social media post, personal, professional images are indispensable on your website. But why does your website need personal, professional photos and not simply stock images?

Visually Appealing

We’ll state the obvious first—professional and personal images make a website more visually appealing. In addition, they can help paint a picture for the reader. This is important for many businesses so that a potential client doesn’t get the wrong idea about a product. A description is good, but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Validation

Almost as important are images of your business and people, not stock images. While a stock image may seem unique, the good ones get used by multiple businesses—and customers notice. Visually showing visitors who you are, and what your product is, makes not only your website but also your business look like one they can trust.

SEO Boost

Web crawlers love images—especially professional and personal images. Why? Because the “behind the scenes” information that they provide allows them to more accurately rank the website. Ensuring that all of your images include a file name that is descriptive of the image, complete alt text, and a caption means that your site’s SEO will be organically boosted just by including this information. And having personal images means web crawlers aren’t seeing the same images over and over.

In addition to an SEO boost, good image information is also important for accessibility.

You may recognize Karianne Munstedt’s work in some of the images on the Hammersmith Support website. Karianne specializes in portrait photography and her philosophy for images is that everyone should embrace their full self—no matter what shape, size, color, or state they are in. Karianne creates photography experiences for women that help them truly SEE THEMSELVES…beyond their external appearances and instead who they truly are in their souls.

What are the most important aspects of shooting for website images?

“There are a host of important aspects that go into shooting for website images (location of images, branding colors, wardrobe, poses, etc.), but for me, the single MOST IMPORTANT aspect is making the client feel comfortable with me/in front of the camera so the truest, most authentic ‘them’ shows through in their portraits. When someone’s true personality is captured, that’s a huge piece of what draws potential clients…that’s where they can create an emotional connection with a potential client just from their photos. We are inundated with thousands of ads each day, and people are craving realness, honesty, and trustworthiness from the businesses they buy from. Creating an environment where a client can freely express their realness, honesty, and trustworthiness, and then capturing those expressions and emotions in their photos, is the most important piece for me.”

Any tips or tricks in preparing for a shoot?

“For me, the best way to prepare for a shoot is to get to know the client…to build the relationship! My goal is to bring out their authentic personality in their portraits, so it’s about meeting with them to get to know them and to learn about their business and the stories they want to tell through their portraits. I will review their website and social media pages so I can get as complete a picture of them as I can.”

UMOM New Day Center

You might remember UMOM from our Hammersmith Support service project last year when we purchased and assembled welcome baskets. UMOM restores hope and rebuilds lives by providing shelter, services, and affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness. Their holiday stocking and gift card drive is on now and it is a wonderful way to get the whole family involved in supporting those who need it most.

Phoenix Center for the Arts

Phoenix Center for the Arts provides arts and culture opportunities for all through education, programming, and advocacy. PCA has worked to become a leader in innovating arts education, bringing teaching artists and students together virtually. You can support PCA by contributing to various programs and scholarships too. And don’t miss the Phoenix Festival of the Arts at Hance Park on December 11th and 12th! This annual festival is back, featuring more than 150 art vendors and cultural organizations. It’s a perfect time to connect with the local art community, pick up unique gifts, and celebrate the season!

#LoveUp Foundation

This local organization strives to be a force for positive change in the lives of children and adults in our community. #LoveUp focuses on providing for children of all ages in the foster care system. Their services range from providing basic necessities like food, school supplies, shoes, and clothes, to giving children special experiences like going to a major league baseball game or enjoying a fun holiday party. Donations can be made in general, you may nominate a family for the Christmas Wish program, or you can purchase #LoveUp shirts to give as gifts, and a percentage is donated back to the organization.

Rancho Feliz

Since 1987, Rancho Feliz has raised and invested over $10 million to build homes, education centers, childcare centers, orphanages, and volunteer dormitories along Arizona’s southern border. The organization focuses on providing education to those in the communities they serve in order to elevate those living in poverty. Rancho Feliz also believes strongly in the value of a volunteer opportunity. They believe that volunteering to serve others enriches the life of the volunteer just as much as it does the people they are serving. Rancho Feliz has many ways to help including onsite volunteering, scholarship funding, and general donations too.

CURE

CURE International is a Christian nonprofit organization that operates a global network of eight children’s hospitals providing world-class surgical care and intentional spiritual care to children living with treatable disabilities. Your monetary donation can support a life-saving surgery for a child!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona

BBBS is near and dear to our founder Heather Locke’s heart, as she sits on the Auxiliary Board for this amazing organization. For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, professionally supported matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in Maricopa and Pinal counties. Your donation helps provide experiences, education, and support for kids in need. 

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Founded in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s mission is “to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.” Our founder, Heather Locke, was selected to participate in the Arizona Finest campaign in 2020 to fundraise for the organization. They accept donations year-round to fund research, education, and support.

Over the last few months, we’ve shared comparisons across several different platforms including WordPress and Squarespace, and WordPress and Wix. We wanted to compare and contrast each platform to give readers a clear sense of which platform could be right for their business.

Today, we are comparing something new: e-commerce options. More specifically, the e-commerce plugin WooCommerce and the platform Shopify. These are the two most popular ways to build an online store, but it’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Here’s why:

Overview

Shopify is a website platform, just like Wix or Squarespace. Each templated site includes a store and the ability to process payments. And just like other platforms, your purchase includes a security certificate, domain, and more.

WooCommerce is a plugin available only on the WordPress platform. A WordPress site is required to use the plugin, and once installed, it is customizable with varying levels of fees depending on add-ons needed.

Shopify

Pros

  • 24/7 support
  • Easy to use with a drag and drop feature
  • Scalability – the site grows with your business
  • Platform updates, security, and other technical aspects handled by platform

Cons

  • Hosted platform – the code lives on the Shopify server and you can’t move it to another host
  • Difficult to customize look and feel
  • Tricky dropshipping options
  • Higher annual cost
  • Scalability is limited to select plans

Bottom line:

Shopify is a great choice for businesses looking for a fast start up and ease of use. However, upgrade options are limited to select plans.

WooCommerce

Pros

  • Scalability – the site grows with your business
  • Open source – fully customizable
  • Dropshipping plugins available
  • Multiple payment processors, including PayPal and Square, available and supported
  • Works with email platforms like Constant Contact and Mailchimp

Cons

  • Can be challenging to customize for the less tech saavy
  • No drag and drop feature
  • Self-hosted site means user is responsible for updates, security certificates, and site backups

Bottom line:

WooCommerce is a great choice for businesses that want full, customizable control over their online store and website. It is also cost-effective with great options for dropshipping. The downside is that the user will need to fully maintain the site and customization can be technically challenging.

We would be doing a huge disservice if we didn’t first highlight the location of the event! The Loveless Cafe has an absolutely stunning barn that has been converted into an event space. Goodbye straw and horses, hello rolling doors that open the entire side of the barn to the lush landscape just outside! And the food…the food! There are not a lot of women’s conferences that would be brave enough to serve fried chicken, biscuits, and homemade cobbler, but we are SO grateful they did! Everything we ate was amazing, delicious, and the perfect Nashville welcome.

The theme of the event was Fearless, and wow did the speakers deliver on that theme!

Britney Campbell

Britney Campbell of HER Bank, a division of Legends Bank, emceed the day. Britney shared how seeing female small business owners struggle with the banking system while trying to navigate the tedious and complicated world of the Paycheck Protection Program during the early days of the pandemic led her to create a division of the bank dedicated to doing business with women.

Gigi Butler

Gigi Butler, the founder of Gigi’s Cupcakes, was the keynote speaker. Gigi shared her story of how she created a business that she eventually sold for upwards of $6 million. Her story started with aspirations of being the next big country music star and how she cleaned houses to make ends meet. One day she overheard a client’s daughter singing – she was incredible! It was at that point that Gigi realized she likely didn’t have the talent or treasure to make a career in the music industry work.

With an idea from her brother, Gigi leveraged every available dollar on her credit cards to open her own cupcake store. Against all odds – including a landlord who refused to rent Gigi her dream location and the bank not wanting to loan to a cupcake baker – Gigi’s doors opened daily to a line around the corner! The business grew to include franchises around the country and eventually sold, giving Gigi the springboard to go on to the next big thing. While that “thing” is still to be determined, Gigi shared that the only way to do something great is to trust in God’s plan and be fearless in your pursuit.

Oh, and the client’s daughter who was the amazing singer? Just happened to be Taylor Swift….!

Social Media, Podcasts, Photography, and More

We also loved hearing from Csilla Muscan of Speak to Scale talk about public speaking as well as how to “speak” through your business social media. Brooke Webb of KB Styled and Shop Kristen Brooke discussed selling and marketing through social media. We enjoyed the process Elizabeth Evans discussed for time management, productivity, and podcasting too. And the entire event was photographed by Amy Allmand Photography, who we had the pleasure of meeting when she shot our Nashville office and team!

Not only were we excited to hear the speakers at TN Women Connect LIVE but we also hosted a booth at the event as well. It was fun meeting many of the attendees and connecting face to face to share what makes Hammersmith Support great! In addition to some fantastic branded lip shimmer giveaways, we were excited to raffle off a gift basket from Thistle Farms. This fantastic Nashville nonprofit creates and sells a variety of candles and body care products to facilitate housing, care, community, and more for those who are victims of abuse, trafficking, and prostitution. It was wonderful to be able to support such an amazing organization and bring some of the decadent products to the women at the event!

The new TN Women Connect membership program was launched at the event and Hammersmith Support is excited to now be a member along with many amazing women! We are thrilled to be a part of the Nashville community and can’t wait to grow our network of friends and business partners.

What Are the Most Important Functions of Your Site for Your Organization?

Really there are two areas of focus with our website:

1) Information for people seeking help.  We want our website to have good information, be easy to use, and be helpful for people experiencing homelessness and looking for resources.

2) We rely on the generosity of our community to power the life-changing work we do at UMOM. When we send letters to our donors asking for support, our website must be easy to navigate and it must be able to process payments easily. Sharing client stories and information about our services is also important so donors can see that every dollar makes a difference.

What Made You Reach Out to Hammersmith Support?

“I learned about Hammersmith through a welcome basket donation drive that the company did for UMOM last fall. When the website maintenance needed to be implemented, we wanted to support a business that cares about our community.

So, what exactly did Hammersmith Support do for UMOM? Here’s a breakdown of the process that we use for all of our clients, and how we personalized it for UMOM as well.

Maintenance

First, we performed general maintenance on the site. This included platform and plugin updates, done one by one to ensure the integrity of the site was maintained. Maintenance also includes checking the security certificate on the site, enrolling in Google Search Console and Google Analytics as well. Each of these steps will keep the website healthy, secure, and ready for business.

Hosting

As a Hammersmith Support maintenance client, UMOM enjoys the benefit of hosting through WP Engine. Our Hammersmith Support dedicated server affords our clients faster load times for their pages. Quicker loading times mean that UMOM’s overall bounce rate is reduced, and potential donors aren’t lost to long wait times. Images load more quickly, and so does vital information and donor forms as well.

Testing

One of the big areas that we worked on for UMOM was testing the various forms, including the donation section. We wanted to ensure that each form was not only capturing the correct information but also being sent to the correct person so that it could be recorded accurately. This was an essential step to capitalize on the donations during Giving Tuesday.

In July, we announced Hammersmith Support’s expansion into Nashville, Tennessee. This growth is especially exciting for our founder Heather as it’s a bit of a homecoming for her. As the Tennessee office continues to develop, so has our Tennesee network. Tell Us a Little About You.

Born and raised here in the Nashville area, I LOVE this city and all that it offers for my family and me. After moving around throughout the first part of our marriage, my husband Knight and I are raising two amazing kids, Will (8) and Reese (6), and couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to do that here in Franklin. We are immersed in life in Franklin with our family, friends, church, and sports! I hate to miss a day at my gym, Burn Bootcamp, and am always excited to help my real estate clients find a home or sell their homes. I am energized every single day by my TN Women Connect events and ladies who are connecting with so many. I’m so excited about what is to come for TN Women Connect!

What Can You Tell Us About the Tennessee Women Connect Event? What Are You Most Excited About?

This TN Women Connect LIVE event is going to be a great day full of information about how to learn and grow our businesses as well as tons of opportunities to connect with other women in business. Our topics include social media, branding, time management tips, and productivity advice. Our keynote speaker, Gigi Butler is speaking about her story of success, trials, and how to be fearless in your business. I am so excited about these things but most of all the opportunity to bring more women together. The magic that happens when real relationships are made is so amazing to see. Every single event shows me this and this LIVE event will be no exception. And, it is going to be so fun too!

Talk to Us About Your “Why” and How That Motivated You to Start TWC.

As a local realtor with Zeitlin Sotheby’s, I was searching for the right kind of networking opportunities for me. Something different and something fun. I started Tennessee Women Connect really just for the opportunity to create a different kind of networking group for myself. I was looking for a group that was made up of women who were wanting more opportunities, more collaboration, ways to learn from each other, and always support. At Tennessee Women Connect we truly strive to have an abundance mindset. We do not cap industries or have exclusive rights for people who do a certain thing. We are for all women excited to connect with others. I am truly passionate about providing these opportunities for women to connect and to comfortably be themselves…going after their dreams. I am thrilled to see what we can do with this group and grow to allow more women around the middle Tennessee area to grow as well.

What Is Unique About Your Style and Product Offering?

We are unique in that not only are our networking events fun and at local businesses, but we are a collaborative group that is truly excited to work together and cheer each other on. Our events range from lunches and happy hours to brunches and one-off meetings to get to know each other more. We have had several speaker events designed to teach skills and a big opportunity for this on October 21st!

What Advice Do You Have for Other Entrepreneurs?

When I started TN Women Connect, I had an idea of what I thought the organization could do (organization loosely…it was just me planning a networking happy hour), but then I let my visions and my goals grow as we did. I let my heart dream of what it could become and I was open to opportunities to grow and ways to pivot. I certainly did not have all of the tools that I would eventually need to grow it but I knew I would figure it out on the way. And I have. The growth we are seeing and the ways we are meeting those needs have been direct results of connections made throughout the last 2 years and the determination I have had to make it happen. My advice is to go for it. Don’t wait until you have it all figured out…get started and figure it out along the way. Make connections with others that will not only lift you up and encourage you but challenge you to go after more, do more, and keep achieving. My circle of influencers and friends/family are one of the most valuable things I could have asked for. Bringing Jenna Griffith and Ashley Fitz in as my leadership team has been the key to our increased success and growth in new areas.
