We tell you often about Hammersmith Support maintenance and how it can benefit your business, so we thought you might enjoy reading about a client’s experience with our maintenance package and how it has worked for their business. We’re excited to introduce you to Debbie Porter of Derma Health Skin & Laser, tell you about the issues she was experiencing with her business website, and how a Hammersmith Support maintenance package solved the problems for her and her business.

First, Some Background

Derma Health Skin & Laser is a Phoenix, Arizona-based full-service medical aesthetics group that has been operating for more than 16 years. Currently, they operate 3 clinics here in the Valley, located in North Phoenix, Chandler, and Gilbert. Their main services include laser skin treatments, microneedling, injectables (Botox & dermal fillers), CoolSculpting & Body Contouring, and aesthetic services. Debbie has served as the Marketing Director of Derma Health for the past three years.

The Challenges

Despite the Derma Health website having been built just prior to Debbie joining the organization, it was quickly becoming out of date and ineffective. As the aesthetic industry was rapidly evolving, Derma Health needed to transform its business model, marketing, and brand strategy to better serve its patients, employees, and the community as well. And their website needed to pivot with them.

The Changes

One of the first projects to be tackled was integrating e-commerce with the existing site. This was a unique challenge in that Derma Health has two e-commerce sites that work independently – one through Allergan and another that they created through Shopify. Because the two sites are integrated, Derma Health needed a solution to help visitors understand how to better navigate the site to find and purchase the products they were looking for without becoming confused by the navigation. In addition, Hammersmith helped Debbie create a microsite landing page for CoolSculpting services, which was a huge success:

“I launched our digital campaign late last year and it has achieved incredible success for us. We are now ranked #1 in the Southwest for CoolSculpting and are ranked #18 in the entire nation for CoolSculpting.”

That’s quite an accomplishment, Debbie!

The Benefits

As a maintenance client, Derma Health enjoys not only the hours of content changes each month but also site, platform, and plugin updates, as well as lead testing, site testing, security scans, a full site backup and hosting, and site optimization too. Debbie also receives a report each month of the findings, information regarding Google Search Console and a Google Analytics report that outlines the most visited pages, where traffic came from, and more.

Here’s what Debbie had to say about the maintenance package and the Hammersmith Support team:

“The team at Hammersmith is talented, responsive, helpful and creative. They listen, respond to requests and help create and execute web solutions quickly. They are also flexible in structuring payments and retainers, which was very helpful during the pandemic when so many of us had to close for a period of time. The team is a pleasure to work with, affordable and does excellent quality work. I highly recommend their services.”

Did you know that the average user won’t wait more than 3 seconds for a website to load before leaving the site? More commonly known as the bounce rate, this statistic is important to understand because poor site speed can lead to a higher bounce rate. Knowing what could be slowing down your site and how to fix it is crucial to a better-performing website. Read below to find out how to measure and improve your site’s speed.

Set a Baseline

To understand how fast or slow your site is actually running, run the website through Google PageSpeed Insights. This free tool will measure your site’s speed and offer suggestions for how to improve speed. This should be done as a first step, and can be repeated to monitor if any adjustments make a difference in site speed.

Updates

If your platform, plugins, or PHP (the scripting language used in web development) are out of date, the result can be slow site speeds. How do you know if your site is out of date? On your WordPress dashboard, look to the Site Health section. Here you can see which areas of your website need to be updated. In addition, checking the website’s plugins for updates, as well as removing any unused plugins, can help improve site speed.

Images and Cache

If your site has a lot of images or graphics, compressing these files can improve loading times. Better yet, you can install an image optimization plugin that will automatically compress new images and graphics as they are loaded onto your site. In addition, enabling caching can help to improve the site’s speed by temporarily storing files locally so that the site can load more quickly as the user continues to browse. Caching tools are included with WP Engine hosting and other hosts offer caching as an add-on, so check your site settings to know whether caching is enabled.

Upgrade Hosting

Each platform offers different hosting solutions and some are higher quality than others. Moving to a higher-quality host can significantly improve site speed. Hammersmith Support Premium maintenance clients enjoy the quality and speed of WP Engine through Hammersmith’s dedicated server. For some businesses, content delivery network (CDN) may be a good solution. A CDN is a group of servers geographically distributed and linked together via the internet. The servers’ purpose is to improve content delivery performance by using a server closest to the end-user.

Hammersmith Support Can Help

Each of our two maintenance packages can help solve many of the issues that come with poor site speed. And our Premium Package includes hosting through WP Engine, a dedicated server just for Hammersmith Support clients. Ready to sign up? Still have questions? Schedule a complimentary 30-minute meeting to get your questions answered.

You likely already know that a Hammersmith Support maintenance package is important for keeping your business website secure, loading quickly, up to date, and backed up too. But did you know that each of our two maintenance packages – Essentials or Premium – also includes content updates? We’re excited to tell you more about what you can do with the 2-4 hours of content updates each month to improve your site.

Hammersmith Support maintenance packages include:

  • Site backups and live staging copy maintained
  • Security scans and malware prevention
  • Site optimization
  • Full site test each month
  • Submission to Google Search Console
  • Premium hosting on a WP Engine dedicated server (premium package)
  • 2-4 hours of content updates each month

Now that you know all the awesomeness that is packed into our maintenance packages, here are some exciting things that the 2-4 hours of content updates can be used for:

Add a Lead Magnet

Build your email list by adding either a free download with email sign up, or creating a simple email pop up to capture more prospective information.

Update Images

Add or change out images on your site as well as update alt text on all images to organically boost SEO.

Content Updates

Stale content is bad for SEO and will affect how your site stacks up to Google Ranking Factors. Use the content time to update your About Us page and or refine product or service information. Add a blog page and finally kick off that business blog to keep your site content fresh.

Add Plugins

Add and utilize plugins – these bites of software provide custom functionality for your site without manually adjusting the site’s code. There are many versions – some of the most popular are SEO improvement, form builders, custom fields, and added security too.

Add Social Follow Buttons

Add or update your social media buttons, or add a feed to your page so that posts from Instagram or Twitter will populate on your website automatically when they are posted to your account.

Industry Specific Updates

Every business is different and has different needs. Content hours can be used to add or improve features specific to your business. For example, real estate agents can add an IDX feed so that current listings automatically populate on the website.

We’ve posted quite a bit about different ways to organically boost your SEO. And the one marketing tool that always checks the most boxes is a business blog.

Without a blog, your website has one link to your site, your URL. But if you posted a blog once a week for a year, you would have 52 links pointing back to your website. Fifty-two! That’s fifty-one additional ways that a potential customer could find your site. That’s huge.

In addition to the links back to your site, business blogs are great for a few more reasons. Here’s why.

SEO

Your website is constantly being crawled by search engines to analyze and categorize your site. The easier it is for a crawler to do this, the better chances your site will get returned when someone searches for a related topic. Google uses over 200 factors to analyze and then rank your site, including freshness of content, magnitude of updated information, and quality of content, especially grammar and punctuation. Blogs check off a lot of these Google Ranking Factors, making it an absolute must to include on your site.

Images

Speaking of SEO, having great images in your blogs not only boosts your SEO but it’s also an opportunity for you to share and add new images without having to redesign your website – meaning the images posted in your blog change often without having to update the main images on your site. Keeping a consistent feel across your site is important, but so is displaying new and exciting graphics. A blog is the perfect spot to keep your customers and readers up-to-date on what’s happening while maintaining the look and feel of your site.

Micro Content

Blog topics are a perfect way to feed your micro content (i.e. social media). Blogs are macro content because they are longer, more detailed posts. But those detailed posts can be broken down into bite-sized pieces and used to feed your micro content. For example, this post could be broken down by headings (images, SEO, links) and used for one to 3+ social media posts. The result is a consistent social media presence and cohesive message for your marketing.

How Hammersmith Support Can Help

Do you have a blog tab set up on your site? Let’s talk. Hammersmith Support’s comprehensive monthly maintenance can help get your blog set up, get your site on track, and keep it there with monthly check ups.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for your sweetheart! Your website needs some love too this holiday and we’ve got just what the love doctor ordered:

Freshen Up Your Content

Have you looked at your website’s copyright date lately? Is it recent or old (very very old)? If it’s been a while since you updated or added to the content on your site, the time to do it is now. Not only is fresh content vital for your SEO (hello Google Ranking Factors) but customers and potential clients notice it, too. Would you want to do business with a company that never updates their information?

Updates

When was the last time your website was updated? Have you been ignoring your platform’s notifications that an update is available? Stop! Get that update running asap. Updates can be extensive or simple, it all depends on what it’s trying to fix. Oftentimes an update is patching a security hole. Even if your site isn’t taking credit card information, protecting your leads’ information is just as vital. After your update is complete, be sure to check that your lead / sign up forms are working, just to make sure you don’t miss out on any information.

Be Mobile Optimized

Do you visit your website from your laptop or your mobile device? If you’re constantly working from your computer, pull up your site on your mobile device instead. Does it show up correctly? Are all the buttons visible / available? With just over half of Internet users out there doing so from their mobile device, you might be leaving money on the table – or more like customers in the cold – if your site isn’t mobile optimized.

Check for SEO

Are you utilizing all of the available ways to organically boost your SEO? If not, now is the perfect time to start. In addition to fresh content, update or add images to your site. Make sure that all of the “behind the curtain” information is completed like alt text, caption, description, and title. Add an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO to ensure that the metadata and keywords on your posts are as good as they can be.

Need a Little Help?

If this list feels a little overwhelming, reach out to Hammersmith Support. Our monthly maintenance packages can help with all of the above and more! This means we take care of your website, and you get to do what you do best, run your business.

According to CNBC, nearly 51% of 3.9 billion Internet users worldwide access websites exclusively from their smart phones. That number is expected to increase to 71% by 2025. Those are some incredible stats! These numbers are based on search engine information alone and don’t account for users who may come to your site via social media. Knowing this information, is your website optimized for mobile viewing?

Google Ranking: Mobile First Infrastructure

In 2016, Google added Mobile First Infrastructure to their 200+ ranking system for SEO. This means that websites that are built with the mobile version of their site first are given a higher ranking. Sites that have any mobile infrastructure are given a higher ranking, but those for smart phone first are the highest.

Types of Business / Clients

Some businesses may be saying “our customers don’t use their smart phones to buy” and for some, that’s true. B2B business is more than likely not being handled on mobile devices. However, B2C business has a much higher probability of being accessed on a smart phone. Not sure how your customers are accessing your site? Enroll your website in Google Analytics and use the Audience report to see how your customers are accessing and engaging with your site.

Testing End User Experience

Lastly, if your site is optimized for mobile view, be sure to test it! Ensuring that every part of your site, from the layout to the overall look, is accessible through the mobile version is critical. In addition, the functionality of a mobile site needs to be quick to load and easy to use – in fact, the majority of smart phone users expect the mobile version of a site to load faster than on a desktop computer, and they will turn to a competitor’s site if unsatisfied with loading times or functionality.

We’re Here to Help

We would love to answer your questions about your business website and talk through any challenges and possible solutions too. Schedule your complimentary 30-minute consultation and let’s talk through your questions.

The next level of service after a website build should be support. Why? Picture this; you build your dream home with all the beautiful details you’ve always dreamed of: paint colors, finishes, stunning kitchen – the works. You live in the house and love it, but you never change a light bulb. Patch a hole in the wall. Water the plants. Put up security lights. Within a few months, the house is a mess – the lights don’t come on, the plants are dead and someone broke in the back door. Suddenly your dream home is a disaster.

Just like caring for your home keeps it in a beautiful state, so does consistent support for your website. Scheduled checks and scans ensure that your site runs smoothly and securely. At Hammersmith Support, our monthly site maintenance support process encompasses:

  • WordPress core and plugin updates that include the oh-so-important security patches
  • Adding client-generated fresh content
  • Lead testing
  • Analytics review through recording traffic

While each of these is important on its own, the components work together to create a system:

–> Fresh content through blogs and/or updated product information creates new information for search engines to evaluate, which means better SEO

–> That content brings potential leads that are given the opportunity to sign up for a newsletter or submit their email for a free download

–> Analytics and lead testing shows us which option got more of a response, the newsletter or the free download, and changes are made accordingly

–> Lastly, all of these processes are done safely because the site has up-to-date security

The end result is a process that allows the business to more efficiently target customers and achieve higher conversion rates. More customers with less work? That’s a winning combination.

When it comes to small businesses creating their websites, rarely is site maintenance part of that thought process. And why would it be? Getting a site up and running is a huge undertaking and checking it off your ever-growing to do list is a major accomplishment.

That’s where website maintenance is essential. It allows you to be confident that your online presence is in good hands and focus on what you do best: running your business. Hammersmith Support provides behind-the-scenes, comprehensive website maintenance that keeps your website running smoothly by performing regular site backups, security and malware protection scans, and site optimization. To help keep your site’s content current and relevant, we submit your site map to the Google Search Console and post content updates as you request them. Our maintenance packages keep your site in good shape. And if something unexpected does happen to your website, instead of panicking, you simply call in the experts who know you and your site, have a real-time back up ready, and are adept problem solvers.

You may use maintenance hours to keep your site’s content fresh and up-to-date. With Hammersmith Support, when you need changes made, you simply send an email to the team.
